New Buddy Icon

January 11th, 2007 by anton

Wow, the holiday season was busy. I’ve been posting some links over at lr2.com but neglecting my hobbies.

AntonCartoon

To kick off the new year I’ve created a new buddy icon.  I got the idea from a howto that I read a week ago, but did my own thing with The Gimp.  I’ve since been shown Inkscape and Xara and plan to redo it in one of them soon.  Both are similar vector based drawing packages and open source.  As a bonus they are both available for apt-get on Ubuntu.

I’ll try to find the time to post a howto for Inkscape and/or Xara for those of you interested in making your own cartoon caricatures.

Canon Digital Rebel XT 8MP Digital SLR Camera w/ 18-55mm Lens

Canon Digital Rebel XT 8MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 Lens (Black)

Amazon drops the price of the Rebel XT to $630:

Also available without the lens for $530:
Canon Digital Rebel XT 8MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only – Black)

And in Silver:

Canon Digital Rebel XT 8MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only – Silver)

This is one step above the used Rebel that I bought from Scott and would make a great starter camera for anyone looking at a digital SLR. Don’t get caught up in the mega-pixel myth. This will produce large prints just as well as the newer 10MP cameras will. You’re better off pocketing the savings and using it later for a cool lens. I’d recommend this 50mm prime for a start.

I’ve started up a Canon store on Amazon just to see how it works.

Home-made Pumpkin Pie

November 21st, 2006 by anton

img_6031_processedMaking your own pie not only tastes better, it is just about as easy as buying one and slightly cheaper.

Preheat the oven to 425. It should be ready about the time we are. Be sure to take the pans out of the oven first if you’re at your mom’s and she likes to store things there.

Crust:
Buy some of the rolled crusts in the refrigerator section of the grocery store. Grease a 9″ pie tin (the disposable aluminum ones work well) and gently form the crust to the inside of the pan. Pinch the edge of the crust into a scalloped shape so it hold it’s form.

Custard:
2 cups pureed pumpkin (a 15oz can is close enough)
1 1/2 cups heavy cream
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup brown sugar
A dash of salt
2 eggs (3 if small)

Toss all the custard parts in a bowl and mix well.

Spices:
1 1/2 tsp Cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground Ginger
1 tsp Allspice

Experiment with the spices. Some people also add nutmeg, cloves and other seasonal spices. You can also buy “Pumpkin Pie Spice” already mixed. Alternately, leave all the spices out and just sprinkle a lot of cinnamon on top of the cooled pies before serving.

Continue mixing the custard parts and add the spices slowly to avoid clumping. You should now have a thick soup. Pour the soupy mixture into the crust. Fill to about 1/4″-1/2″ of the top and carefully put it in the oven.

Real Pumpkin:
To use real pumpkin just buy a couple small pie pumpkins.  Slice them in half and remove all the stringy bits in the middle.  Microwave in a covered pyrex dish with a little water until mushy.  Let it cool enough to touch and scoop the meat out with a spoon.  Puree the meat and use the same as the canned stuff.
Baking:
Bake at 425 for about 20 minutes, turn the oven down to 350 and bake about 60 more minutes (+/- 15 min). The pie is done when a knife poke into the custard comes out mostly clean. The pie will firm up some as it cools. Let it sit for an hour (or more) and enjoy warm (or cold) with whipped cream.

Tips:

  • You can make 2 or 3 pies in the same time it takes to make one.
  • One 15oz can is close enough to 2 cups.
  • It is very hard to over-cook just don’t burn the crust.
  • Even undercooked it still tasted great.

You can protect the crust for the last half of the baking by making a shield of tin foil (or buying one already formed at a kitchen store). Just be sure not to cover too much of the custard or it will take longer to bake.

Treehugger: 68 and 100 LED Waterproof Flashlights Introduced

Fresh from China, comes this ruggedized, waterproof flashlight. It has 68 LEDs that are powered by four AAA batteries. If you need even more LEDs, they have a 100 LED version available. The light is obviously bright, but one reviewer says it’s not as focused or as bright as Luxeon type flashlights with reflectors. The price is hard to beat though: $12.99.

Treehugger found this cool LED flashlight.

Boudreaux the Baptist

October 24th, 2006 by anton

Boudreaux the Baptist
Boudreaux, a Cajun highlander from Rapides Parish in central Louisiana, was
an older, single gentleman, who was born and raised a Baptist, living in
South Louisiana. Each Friday night after work, he would fire up his outdoor
grill and cook a venison steak.  Now, all of Boudreaux’s neighbors were
Catholic… and since it was Lent, they were forbidden from eating meat on
Fridays.  The delicious aroma from the grilled venison  steaks was causing
such a problem for the Catholic faithful that they  finally talked to their
priest.

The priest came to visit Boudreaux, and suggested that Boudreaux convert to
Catholicism.  After several
classes and much study, Boudreaux attended Mass… and as the priest
sprinkled holy water over him, he said, “You were born a Baptist and raised
a Baptist, but now you are Catholic.”

Boudreaux’s neighbors were greatly relieved, until Friday night arrived, and
the wonderful aroma of grilled venison filled the neighborhood.  The priest
was called immediately by the neighbors and, as he rushed into Boudreaux’s
yard, clutching a rosary and prepared to scold him, he stopped in amazement
and watched.  There stood Boudreaux, clutching a small bottle of water which
he carefully sprinkled over the grilling meat, and chanted:
“You wuz born a deer, and you wuz raised a deer, but now you a catfish.”
