All good things.

The finished light. Curiously strong, not too bright.

This is very close to what I see with my eyes. It’s enough light for late night surfing or coding, and positioned properly could be used as a reading light. A reflector might help some. I’m working on finding something that will look nice and function as a light weight reflector.

If you are going to use NiMH batteries only you should be able to get by without the regulator. Rechargable AAs run about 1.35V compared to alkaline which can be a bit over 1.5V. Adding the regulator leaves you open to powering the light with whatever batteries you have on hand.

I haven’t tested battery life yet, but using high capacity batteries should yield somewhere near 50 hours at 42 mA. Half that if my meter is broke and it’s really drawing 80 mA.

All of the pictures I took during construction are available here.
